So I took the 1 train to 42 then the shuttle over to grand central then the 6 to 96th St and walked to 1st Ave... Took 45 minutes. I'm so pissed.. Lol.. I didn't not know it was thaaaat long. Anyway any suggestions on trying a different route to/from Penn Station that might be quicker. I belong to citibike...not sure it that or another subway would be better. Thanks a lot....

Try the E to the 6 train. It may be marginally better.

Take the #2 train (express) at 34th or 42nd St to 96th St and transfer there for the #96 which will take you to 96th st and 1st Ave.

If all goes according to plans by the end of this year you can take the Second Avenue Subway from 34th Street up to 96th.

You can do the 2/3 express at 34th to 96th and take the bus crosstown. The train ride alone will be 5 minutes. I don't know how long the bus ride will be.

You can also take the 1/2/3 to 42nd, take the 7 to Grand Central (I think it's a shorter/faster walk than going to the shuttle because the stairs to the 7 are right next to the stairs for the 1/2/3), and then take the 6 uptown. (Or you can take the 4/5 to 86th and then transfer to 6 to go to 96th.)

Taking the E crosstown is a pain, plus the E train is always packed and it stinks. I'm on the UWS and have to go to midtown east every day - it takes at least 3-4 trains and a good 35-45 minutes.

Do that all the time if on the westside and don't feel like walking. However have been known to walk from 8th Avenue in the 40's or 50's all the way to the East 70's (home).

Just take the 1, 2, or 3 to either 86th, 96th, 72nd, 80th and then get on the crosstown bus.

In fact the 96th and 86th crosstown buses has recently become "Select" service which is slightly faster than the 72nd and 81st.

Now if you are really game you can sign up for Citibike and take one across down.....

That is correct, but the train could also be the #1 or the #3. The bus even turns North on First and goes up to 97th St, the last stop. The M96 is the best of the crosstown routes.

(One fare for the trip.)

An alternate is the C train on Eighth Ave side of Penn Station to 96th and Central Park West and the same M96 bus.
