I will be traveling to NYC this weekend with my 85 lb Golden Retriever in tow, and have been wondering what New Yorkers do to transport their large-breed dogs. Can you take your large dog on any public transportation in NYC? What do New Yorkers do when they have an emergency and need to transport their dogs to the veterinarian sans vehicle?

Are dogs allowed in any public places in NYC or are dogs mostly considered nuisances?

I think only Guide Dogs are allowed in most public places.

Especially a large retriever would not be allowed on public transportation.

Generally on public transportation (trains and buses) an in public places your dog needs to be in a carrier.

FYI, taxi cabs don't have to pick you up with a dog either, unless it is a service dog.

Even with my pug in a carrier I get dirty looks from bus drivers. And one cab driver asked me if I couldn't put my dog in the trunk!!!!!

Be kind and leave your dog home.

Well, while visiting NYC I stopped by Central Park before 9 (while all the dog owners are there) and was talking to some people about dogs and public transportation, and it turns out there is indeed a transportation option for dog owners in NYC.

Sure, but how often are you going to be transporting your dog? Maybe once or twice a year to the vet. Its a very viable option for someone who is considering getting a car instead.

My dog was going all over the city - a LOT - play dates, meet ups, going to daycare, the vet, etc...At one point he went to daycare every day. On the bus.
