I've got a scheduled bus trip going into Port Authority on Monday night just before midnight. My transfer to Baltimore doesn't leave until a few hours later. I haven't been to Port Authority in over a decade. I was just reading all these negative reviews of the place with people saying what a horror show it is. Literally "hell on earth" to so many. Where is the safest place to wait at that time of the night (12am - 4am)?
As for finding the gate, who are the best people to ask? Greyhound's website says their buses leave from the North Terminal. Says Gate #63 for Baltimore, but everyone says the gate numbers are never the same. I'm not sure why that website lists gate #'s if they change every day. Any tips would be appreciated.
It is well policed there because of terrorist concerns but still not a very pleasant place to wait. The Westway Diner on 9th Avenue between 43 & 44 streets, less than 2 short blocks away, is a large 24 hour safe and inexpensive place to wait.
Port Authority closes down at night so it will probably be pretty dead.
(The Terminal operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., however, the South Wing is closed, and all departures operate from the North Wing. During these times, your bus may operate from a gate different from the one used during the day. Please check with your carrier for late-night gate changes.
Only ticketed passengers are allowed in the Terminal between 1 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Late-night passengers must enter via the North Wing entrance (Eighth Avenue between 41st and 42nd streets). During these times, all other entrances are closed.)
As Taxi Guy suggested go hang at the Westway Diner or catch at midnight movie across the street (42nd St and 8th Ave). There are two theaters right across from one another
It's really not bad at all and there are plenty of restaurants nearby (like Heartland Brewery and the new Beer place) if you don't want to wait there.
I have also seen that very late at night they try to limit access to Port Authority to people that had bus tickets. I've seen police after midnight after to see tickets.
well it's past midnight and there's no sign of mc33433, I guess the zombies got to him. Aw well, maybe the next guy will make it
