i will never forget in June of 1978 in the Port Authority terminal a vagrant grabbed a police officer's gun and began shooting randomly at passersby and one of the cops. One of the cops shot him and i remember a passerby wailing "I hope he dies". I wasn't personally there but i read about it in the papers. It still stays with me. The PA frightened me back in the 70's but the suburbs were dull so i looked fwd to some excitement. in the city The PA and Times Square certainly provided that!!

but you can see what the PA was like back 35 years ago--NASTY!!!

its not that bad...

unlike during the day, late at night they close off most of port authority except the lower level. There are a ton of cops everywhere and the only way to get into port authority is to show your bus ticket to the cops whom will then proceed to allow you entry. This generally keeps the riff raff out.

The only danger you will have is if you stand to close to other people you might get puked on by some drunk guy waiting for a bus back to jersey.

It's fine. In fact it's head and shoulders above most bus stations around the country.

I remember I use to get the creeps being around that terminal in the late 80s. That structure is really ugly

I think I committed a faux pas there back in the '90s. I was standing in line in the men's room and a guy turned around from the urinal and showed everyone his erect penis. Was I supposed to applaud?

It's an ugly building that could have been better if PANY just privitized it.

Indeed very ugly. There was supposed to be a skyscraper built over it but the plans keep getting scrapped every time a project gets proposed. It would have included some rehabilitation of the bus station

Was it worth an applause?

When I was 20 years old (1996) I had a stop there from midnight to 2am during Feb break from school. I was female, petite and reasonable attractive (and a rather funky dresser at that time).

No one bothered me.

I say in the line for the bus with my backpack and read a novel, except when I got up to use the bathroom.

It was a pretty dull wait, actually.

I've also traveled by bus a couple time since then and been there with othrr female friends.

Never had a particularly remarkable incident.
