I'm considering signing a lease for a one bedroom on 99th street, close to Lexington Ave. There is a housing project across the intersection, but everything below 98th seems safe. As a mid-twenties white female, would I be ok living there?
Don't ask here. Go to that location and talk to your "maybe future" neighbors. It is extremely easy for a mid-twenties female (any race) to get some true and valuable information.

That part of East Harlem has overflow from the UES. I lived there for two years. You should be fine.
NyWriterdude, thanks. I have walked around up there and it seems ok, I've asked the super if there were any crimes and he said none in the ten years he's been there. Does it get sketchier on lexington at night? Me and my friends like to go to ABV on 97th and lex, and it's never seemed too, too bad....
If you're worried about crime just walk into the 23 Precinct Station House at 162 East102nd Street (212- 860-6411) and ask. Also make sure to visit and get to know the area at all hours and all days of the week. You can also go to the quarters of Engine 53/Ladder 43 (FDNY) at 1836 3 Avenue (102 Street) and ask there. FD and PD are probably your best sources. Good luck!

Its never been bad in recent years. As the UES crept northward, that part of Spanish Harlem got policed a lot better.
Just before I moved there years ago, late at night, you would sometimes seem intimidating groups of guys, sometimes with pit bulls. A bunch of us who were concerned called the cops, and those problems disappeared. I last lived there March 2012. But yes, you should be fine. Its an area well served by cabs too, if you wish to go that route.
Again, white females pushing gentrification into the no-no areas. You would be surprised how many professional young folks live in those "overflow" blocks. I do think that 3rd Ave might be safer for those 3-4 blocks away from 96th St.
Remember Harlem / East Harlem is a two-faced phenomenon - it becomes something else at dusk.
It's good. The project across the street is nothing bad by NYC standards
