Hey folks- My family is relocating to NYC as I'll be working at NYP- Columbia Univ Med Ctr in July. I'm a medical resident (which means not much $$$) and have 2 children. Safety and good schools are absolute must haves. Any ideas/suggestions/comments? Thanks....Frelugali

I went to medical school there and was a fellow there, as well. Your best bet is to go up to Riverdale. With kids you want good schools. There are NONE in that neighborhood. Your other choices are really Westchester and northern NJ. Your biggest issue is that you want to be able to get home easily at all hours. And you're going to have to get parking through the hospital, as well.

I just graduated from their residency program in july. Columbia owns a lot of the buildings in the area and maintains them very well. I had a ver big 1 bedroom 2 blocks away between Ft. washington and broadway and paid $850/month (market rate prob 1200-1400). I dont know much about the schools there though. You could also look at the places near the cornell campus in the east side (as an employee at columbia you are eligible for cornell apts as well). If interested you need to call the real estate department at NYP and let them know you are a resident/fellow, etc.

I live up the street from the medical center and love the neighborhood, but agree that the schools are just awful. I second the vote for Riverdale for better schools and affordability. Although, I just attended a focus group with a Riverdale mom and she was less than impressed with the public schools there. Their reputation may supercede the student achievement there. You should check Inside Schools for the scoop.

Good point people often forget that a lot of the buildings around the hospital even the residential ones, are owned by the hospital and Columbia U. Some of them are really nice. Like luxury building nice.

They're NOT like 'luxury building nice.' I lived in one. And they're not easy to get into, especially if you're from the NY area. The only reason I got hospital housing is that I was mugged in the elevator of my building (also in the area, but not owned by the hospital).

The apartments are OK, but no dishwashers, lots of cockroaches...and lots of loud medical student neighbors. But they are SAFE. Same for the NYH housing, which I had as a resident at NY Hospital on the East side.

There are a few around that are at the luxury level, but the bulk are not. I should have been more specific.

The hospitals provide NOTHING that even comes close to luxury housing to their staff. I've lived in housing from both these hospitals and each of them lacks a LOT. While there might be luxury housing in the area of NY Hospital, there's nothing around Columbia-Presbyterian. And none of it, at NY Hospital, is luxury.
