Beware of the flow of traffic. Stopping short, staring up with a gaping wide open mouth in awe is a sure sign of a tourist. Get out of the way at least.
Be yourself and do what you want to do, its your vacation. Don't worry about trying to be "cool" and fit in cause you won't no matter what. And besides who cares if you do. If you can help it though, please don't walk slow in the middle of the sidewalk, if you most move to the side of it and walk slow.
like everyone has said, you not looking like a tourist, isn't going to matter. You're just a drop in the bucket so it won't even be noticeable. If you want to not act like a tourist, all you have to do is think.
like... "Oh my gosh that is a pretty view! should I stop right here dead in the middle of the sidewalk where everyone is walking and set up my tripod or should I go over there to that open space and take a picture?"
or "wow, everyone here is rude, they keep bumping into me as they walk faster than me. maybe I should move over" It's just like driving, right = slow; left = fast
BE a tourist...enjoy everything New York has to offer.
So many of us who LIVE here forget to do that.
Why pay big bucks and NOT take advantage of everything as if we were tourists?
(Today I did the Chelsea Arts District and saw more Basquiats and Helen Frankenthalers than I thought either created, both at the two Gaghhosian Galleries (21st and 24th...all for free.))
When someone asks how not to seem like a tourist, the implication is that you feel the city is out to scam you. Which is a bit insulting, and really not true very much. In fact, there are instances where people go out of their way to help tourists.
So, go ahead, be a tourist. Two suggestions for tourists would be:
1. If you stop to check your map, don't stop in the middle of the sidewalk.
2. If you're asking for directions, be succinct with your question - don't tell us your life story.
