Im moving to NYC the first week of February if I can find a place by then.

How did everyone find where they live and how long did it take to make the move.

ex. did you use a Realtor, broker, walked into a building off the street and asked how to rent etc.??

Its quite easy to find an apt in NYC. Howver that being said most lilely will not have all the things you want unless your rich. Its give and take, figure out what is most important to you. I've moved many times. I've used a Broker, Newspaper, Craigslist, Contacted a building directly, and walked around neighborhoods going door to door.

No longer a renter but rented many apartments all over the city over the years.Always found them either by calling the number of the landlord or management company usually found somewhere on the facade of most NYC apartment buildings or by asking building superintendents if there were apartments available.Often,if a super doesn't have any apartments in his building,he will know if there are any in other buildings in the neighborhood.

Add my +1 for Craigslist and a broker. My first few apartments were shares that I found by e-mailing ads on Craigslist (I looked at dozens of apartments before one worked out; both by own preference and the preference of the renter), as well as posting an ad on Craigslist seeking housing (I ended up finding great success that way). I also have worked with a broker, though in the grand scheme of things, I think it is important to think about how that broker fee is going to factor into your future (I.E. if you think you are going to move in a year, or don't plan for potential rent increases, you may be paying broker fee after broker fee, and that will become absurdly expensive). I have never tried calling numbers on buildings/speaking to Supers, though I have heard great stories of this as well.
