I was checking out the rent prices in some of the desirable neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. It seemed to me they're at or nearly Manhattan prices.

Is this generally the case? Or can you find neighborhoods in these boroughs that aren't run down and that have good amenities but are significantly more affordable than Manhattan?

The most expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan have rents that can be comparable to the most expensive neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. However it is possible to find good neighborhoods in the outer boroughs that are affordable. Bay Ridge, Brooklyn instantly comes to mind.

I think Rego Park and Astoria in Queens come to mind.

The most expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan have rents that are higher than anywhere else in the United States. There are parts of Brooklyn and Queens that are more expensive than SOME parts of Manhattan (South of 96th St, that is) and higher than AVERAGE Manhattan rents.

But rents on Carnegie Hill will make your eyeballs blister. Not even the finest parts of Brooklyn Heights and NOWHERE in Queens can you fetch rents like these.
