I have heard from a few ppl that when it comes to looking for rentals Craigslist isn’t the best place to look for in NYC. Realtors tend to put up apartments they’ve already rented just to show off what kinds of apartments they can get! Has anyone had this sort of experience? Or know much about Craigslist: Rentals for NYC? Another subject is: Are the jobs posted on Craigslist real or are they scams? Thank you!

Mostly scams.

Check indeed.com for jobs instead. For real estate there are plenty of brokers you can work with directly or a few apartment sites depending on what you are looking for. I tend to lean towards using padmapper.com for it.

But yes Craigslist becomes a game of fishing through the scams to find the few legit posts on there, sadly.

Thank you, I had been searching a lot in Craigslist, but I’ll stop wasting my time now!

I post jobs for my company on Craigslist and as far as I know, we're not running a scam.

Craigslist has added a charge of $25 to post a job ad to deter fake job postings, so I think you can be pretty comfortable they are legit.

The jobs are legit. Rental ads are mostly brokers looking for business. They show you one on CL that's unavailable and steer you to ones they need to move off their lists.

Craigslist has been good to me. I have found apartments, roommates, gotten jobs, done research studies, sold and bought things from it.

This is good news, Given the number of scammers on there taking advantage of people esp over the last couple of years with the economy being so volatile. It will not stop all of them but it's a step in the right direction.

That's even more encouraging. I am planning to move my family back to NYC...either Brooklyn or Queens this summer. I have been combing CL to get an idea of the lay of the land. I keep finding so many brokers that I have almost decide to pay one. Mind you, I NEVER paid a broker when I lived in NYC. I do have close friends that can help out when I am ready to move, though.
