Chauncey Street near the J/Z is in the Ocean Hill sub neighborhood of Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn...it's a pretty rough area.

The area around the Smith-9 Street train station in Brooklyn is a little more industrial, with some residential mixed in. It's not a bad area per se but has bad connotations because it's the closest train station to Red Hook. The neighborhood that the train station is Carroll Gardens, close to the border of the neighborhood of Red Hook.
