so today i went on my normal routine - went to grand central to take the 7 train back to queens. it was closed. so thats great. i go down the stairs to the station where you can take the 3, 4, and 5 trains. as i get down there and im walking towards the middle of the station, i see these huge AC boxes on the ceiling (right above my head) and its blasting cold air.
i dont remember seeing that thing there. is MTA adding ACs to train stations?!?!

The 3 train doesn't go to Grand Central, you're thinking the 4-5-6 trains.
The subway is Grand Central Station, but Metro-North trains arrive at Grand Central Terminal. They are connected, yet distinct.
As to A/C, I recall the system being in place for a while.

Those A/C units were a pilot project that will not likely spread to other stations. I remember when they were installed and I wanna say they were put in place in the early part of the last decade. I used that station daily at the time and was shocked one day to feel cool air coming from air conditioners. Seems kinds wasteful to be blowing cold air into hot tunnels--but I wasn't complaining.
