Moving to NYC from San Francisco - Neighborhood question; Clinton and Rivington (restaurants)

How's this part of the LES? I've heard mixed things; some say it's great, tons to do within a few blocks (bars, restaurants, etc), and others have said that though it's great, it's a bit on the sketchier side.
I hate that Rivington area, the streets are always filthy, that long narrow park is disgusting. I know it is gentrifying but every time I walk around there I feel I need a shower.
