I am thinking about moving to new york city when I finish college. I am going to be a graphic designer. I have my ear lobes stretched over 1 inch. Would I be able to find a job being a graphic designer in New York City? Do people in NYC care about piercings and tattoos?
It depends on the type of company you are going after. There are going to be plenty of places that say no to you because of our looks, but there are also going to be plenty of younger focused companies looking for that type of creative person.
I suspect that New Yorkers are more tolerant of piercings and such than midwest towns, BUT that doesn't mean that it's a look that would be acceptable in a business situation.
I suggest that you not do anything further to yourself that will make you look odd.
You could always try being a barista, theres a huge demand for them in lower Manhattan and Western/North Western Brooklyn.
I just spit my coffee out when I read that.
Unfortunately graphic designers are a dime a dozen here. There are certain fields that are over saturated in the city.
I would try to find a job first before coming. And while yes, some companies are more relaxed, I would remove any piercings and such for the interview.
Well, I think you should take that off during interview and all. No matter which job you're going to find or where you live. Being a normal guy will always do the trick. Sure, you got style and you're young but it doesn't hurts if you're so stylish when outside work and vice versa.
