NY Jury Duty (violent crime, exemption, law)

I'm asking for a friend who was called for service this coming week.
Is there an age over which you can get an automatic exemption from jury duty?

18 years old to no upper age limit. If there are medical reasons, your friend could get out with a doctors note.

I guess then she will have to use her back as an out if she gets called for a trial. (Her back is a ruined mess of bars and screws so no lying involved.)

The reasoon I asked about NY is that NJ had an age over which you get a jury exemption by merely asking for it, but I'm not sure if it is 70 or 75?

when i got called they were telling those of us with medical notes that you would not be automatically excluded.you would be assigned a case and it will be up to the judge to dismiss you.

as a long time sufferer of colitus i was always automatically excluded with my note but not last time.

I just tell them I cannot vote to convict anyone of a non-violent crime (drugs, prostitution, gambling)...and I cannot. So that takes care of criminal and grand juries. My ace in the holes is that when asked would I take the judges instructions to vote only on matters of FACT but NOT LAW, I say, quite correctly, that in a jury room only the jury is supreme. Juries have long voted on LAW and I would do so and NOT take the judge's instructiion as absolute.


I would do petit but the last time I got a petit call, I was going to accept the calling but the courtroom had been painted 3 months earlier??? and I complained of chest discomfort, REAL. Judge laughed and said the worst thing is dead jurors and let me off. (I don't know how anyone could spend hours in that room.)

But my friend is legit...having her sit for hours on end would be "cruel and unusual punishment" becasue her back is such a wasteland. I'll tell ger to bring the records of her surgery.

Friend got the official word from the Clerk of the Court: After 75 you do not need to serve jurry duty in NY State unless you WANT to.
Friend said she wasn't there yet, but the Clerk said "Close enough"...she's 71. So she got off after two hours in the bullpen.
She's a happy woman today.

you just go, it is just a sitting expidition for one day, if they call you you get 40 bucks for the day, and hopefully they will not keep you.
it is a PITA, but it is what it is.

they dont care about medical reasons unless you tell them you are dead.

Just say you are good friends with the defendant, they will definitely let you go then..

I saw a judge pull a nifty little trick a few years ago when I had jury duty. In the juror pool room he said, "If there is anyone here who has trouble understanding English please make your way to the door on the far right of the room". About 30 people stood up and started walking. The judge said "Hold it right there. You all can obviously understand English. Please sit back down".

It seems difficult to get out of jury duty in NYC from my experience.

I always thought that when you tell them you can't be fair or your anti-police so you can get out of going that they keep some sort of secret CIA file on you.
