Motel might be a bit pricey for a month in NYC. A short term rental privatley should be looked into.

You could look into motels/hotels in Long Island City, Queens which would be a very short commute to Midtown Manhattan by subway.
Another option would be the Vanderbilt YMCA on East 47th Street if you have some non local photo identification card (as it is meant for non-residents and they will ask to see you non-local id.).

I stayed in a cheap motel in Rahway, down the 1&9, it was around $40.00,( this was about four years ago) but its about 20 miles from the city. I usually give myself 40 minutes to drive minutes into the city during rush hour. You could probably find something closer in Elizabeth or Union, The average cheap motel is around $70.00 ,They always ask "How many hours sir"

Check the HOLLAND HOTEL in Jersey City. It is right at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel and a 10 minute walk from the PATH train at Newport.

But I agree with Scott, any daily rate for a month is going to be pricey. Even $80 a night is $2400 a month.

Back a few decades ago, the YMCA was often an option for a couple week or a couple months...seems not so today.
