Don't look now...but you answered your own question.

Are there people living underground in places that are not associated with the subway or other trains?

There was a book called Mole People by Jennifer Toth (early 90s), which I'm reading now. Some people claimed the book was inaccurate.
I read that book. Not the best written book, but a very interesting topic.

I would not doubt there is a lot of truth to it. I recall riding the subway and seeing some guy hanging out on a mattress reading the paper- in a part of the tunnel rather far from any station.

There used to be a guy living in one of the passages below the Chambers Street station on the J line. He had been a plumber before quitting his job, and he rigged up a system of hot and cold running water, as well as electricity. He's not there any more--but he lived quite comfortably in his space for well over a decade.

My brother has been a track worker for the MTA for close to 12 yrs now...said when he was doing the 3rd rail work and was deep in the tunnels they saw large groups of people, & some strays living down there. he never interacted with them, but every time he saw them it sort of spooked him.

always makes me sad to know people have to live like that

Sounds like where the mutant humans were living in "Battle for the Planet of the Apes."

Sewers? In third world countries many orphaned children live in the sewer system, high on glue. "The children of the night".
