I was wondering how hard it is to find an affordable apt that allows large dogs. I have a giant schnauzer and am looking at moving to preferably Manhattan next August or September. Giant schnauzers are 100lbs little shorter than a great dane
It is going to be a tad difficult with an 80-100 pound dog. I know Beach Lane MGMT accepts dogs up to 50-60 pounds, and there are some pet friendly buildings. MC33433 is correct in saying that some landlords will extra security or a pet deposit.

I have some friends that live uptown around 175th that have 2 dogs in their apartment, both decent size (labrador sized). Their building is very pet friendly.
Many apartments limit you based on the weight of your dog. Some ask for an additional deposit for the animal in case of damage. Sometimes people omit the fact they have a dog on their apartment application, but there is a chance of running into trouble if the building finds out. But there are definitely dog friendly apartments out there.
I personally thing it is MEAN to have big dogs in a apartment ...........they need a garden to run and most nyc apts are way to small for big Hounds.
Is it mean if they live in an apartment with a lot of square footage, and take their dogs out running/walking for appropriate times every day? I don't think so.
Well, since the OP said affordable apt, I don't think that we are looking at over 600 sq ft. Not taking sides, but just saying. To the OP, what neighborhoods were you looking at?

It exists. It depends what neighborhood. I live in a very affordable apartment that is over 600 sq feet.
The friends I was referring to with the two dogs on 175th, their apartment is 1800 square feet. So with the two of them, an infant, and 2 dogs, they are very comfortable and the dogs get lot of exercise. They pay less than 2k a month as well. It exists.
True it does exist. Hopefully the OP doesn't mind being uptown. I have a 45 pound dog in a large three bedroom uptown, but I know people who live in the village and keep Golden Retrievers and Labs cooped up in tiny one bedrooms.

I am going to agree with this also. Huge dogs should not be kept in small apartments, I think it is cruel. Especially if their are working people and the dog is left alone all day long.

yeah but lets face it, MOST ny apartment DO NOT have a lot of square footage....
