Reading some of the threads about Hunts Point and the now infamous HBO Documentary highlighting the prostitution that was once prevalent got me thinking about the other red light districts around NYC back in the 70's, early 80's. I've heard about Times Square but someone mentioned that Park Ave South at night used to be a red light district area back in the day.

Umm...what?! Was someone just pulling my leg or is this true.
I can't imagine. Course I can't imagine Times Sq ever being anything but Disney-like as it is now.

The city as a whole was a completely different animal back that. Whores and skells everywhere. A different universe.

Nothing to see here folks...

Default i used to do an internship

on E 28th off Lex and I heard stories about prostitutes in the area, that was in 1992-1993.

I heard stories about prostitutes on 6th Avenue in the upper 50's near Central park. that is hard to believe since that is a very conservative type area with a lot of office buildings and posh hotels

back in the day the place for prostitution was 42 st between 7th and 8th avenue and 8th Avenue from the Port Authority up to about 49th/50th. restauranteurs located on theater streets that were too close to 8th Avenue often complained of diminished revenue because of the street activity

the last time i ever saw blatant prostitution going on on 8th Avenue was in 1996. if there is any today, it's very discreet

Park Avenue South and Union Square were sketchy until relatively recently. Park Avenue South wasn't terrible, but certainly not what is today.

I worked at the PABT from 1979 to 1982. 42nd Street was MUCH different back then in that area. Not only the prostitution, but the "bag ladies" who lived in the bus terminal and the pimps outside waiting for the runaways to come in on buses. I was 20 and from New Jersey when I started working there and I remember looking at 42nd between 7th and 8th and thinking "WOW, there are a lot of dirty movies here." The title "Seven Into Snowy" particularly stands out in my memory.

Where on Park Avenue South? The reason I ask is that the Madison Square Park area used to be a mess. It's very nice now, but when we moved into our building on 23rd Street, one of my coworkers who remembered the neighborhood from the 60's said he came in via the PATH but got off on 14th street, walked to Union Square and then came up PAS because he thought it would be safer. He was afraid to walk past the park. Once he got to work, he looked out the window and was shocked to see what the area had become.

There is an old movie, one of Al Pacino's first, called The Panic in Needle Park, about junkies being affected by a heroin shortage. Needle Park was Madison Square Park.

your right about both. There was a lot of street activity on PAS and CPS. CPS has a lot of hotels and tourists an was well known for finding wealthy men both ressys an tourists.

PAS and madison ave. between 26 and 34th streets was escort row most of the escort agency's had offices there and the girls use to curb crawl while waiting for bookings .
