How safe would this area (Hell's Kitchen, i believe) be for a 23 year old girl studying economics this Summer + on? Any information about the area besides safety would be extremely helpful, too! Thanks
Yea you'll be fine. Even though when you start hitting 10th, 11th, avenues its not "Times Square"..you'd be surprised at how many people are still out at all times of the night. Im not sure if your a native NYer but I recently moved down to 42nd n 11th avenue and its been absolutely fine
Edit to add: The one thing that sucks is that the nearest transportation (trains) is 8th ave..which can feel like its miles away sometimes. But theres a abundance of restaurants, diners, obviously times square is a few avenues over if your looking for movies, theater, fun etc...
Hey! Thanks for the quick response - I'm probably a bit more nervous than I should be but I'm not from NY (Ohio, ugh..)! I'll be going to school in TriBeCa + then to NYU, so I'll probably be using transportation regularly so it helps to know about that, too.
I'm not huge into Times Square but it is somewhat comforting to know that people are still out + walking around later..thank you!
Well that's reassuring, I've read some ridiculous stories/posts about the area + how 'dangerous' it is - all were dated between 2007-2010 so I figured I'd ask anyway.
Could you possibly tell me how long it would take to get downtown (Tribeca) from 42nd + 10th/11th? I don't know too much about the transportation systems of NY yet!

To get from 42nd Street and 10th Avenue to Tribeca (Canal Street or Chambers Street station on the line) will take approximately 16-18 minutes, according to Google Maps (http://tinyurl.com/3m2rrlx - broken link).
I lived on 48th and 10th for 10 years until I moved last year and that whole area is fine. There are a few clubs a little north of you, so you'll probably see plenty of clubbers walking the streets at all hours on the weekends, but otherwise, it's fairly quiet.
Of course, you'll have your exceptions. For instance, when they shut down the west side for the Fourth of July fireworks, it gets crazy around there, but those are really more the exception, rather than the rule.
If you don't want to hoof it the two blocks to 8th, you can always hop the M42 across 42nd, but it's a quick walk. The nearest supermarket is the Food Emporium on 42nd, east of 10th (there's also an entrance on 43rd). Tons of restaurants and stores on 9th.
Fresh bagels from H&H on 46th and West St (12th), great bread from the Sullivan St Bakery on 47th (10th and 11th) and if you like Mexican, there's a bodega on 10th, between 47th and 48th that has the best tacos. The Market Diner on 43rd and 11th isn't bad, and Daisy Mae's BBQ on 46th and 11th has really great barbecue.
