The president of Hispanics Across America is leading the program. He's also a representative of the Bodegueros Association and says he wants to send a simple message: "If you rob a bodega, you can lose your life in the process." Starting Thursday, the HAA says it will hand out applications for gun permits to qualified store owners
Having more guns in NYC is not a good idea. It SOUNDS like a good idea, but we need less guns, not more. If someone keeps attacking you with a knife, the solution is not to get a knife too, or arm everyone with knives, the solution is to get the knife away from the guy and put him away.
What's next? Criminals start robbing Dry Cleaners with Bazookas, so there will be a crusade to arm 90 pound chinese ladies with Bazookas? You think that's the answer?
Evidently, HAA is in favor of vigilantism--a conclusion I only draw because that's exactly what they're proposing. We should all stay tuned; this will be very, very interesting the moment some other group turns the tables on them.
That's exactly what it is Fred..and it would not set a good precedent, especially in NYC. Can you imagine a shootout between the Bodega owner and the Criminal and random people getting shot with stray bullets and killed because of it. Yikes.
This is New York we are talking about. Besides the cops, only the criminals and well-connected are allowed to carry weapons. You can hear Bloomburd from a mile away. But that is not to say many bodegos in the hood already have some guns through clandestine channels.
I'm emphasizing that you guys outraged reaction over this is unfounded. Bodega owners won't get guns overnight, let alone the majority of them under this program.
I would not say outraged, I would say nervous because it would set a very bad precedent. I think we should all watch how this plays out. Would you feel safer knowing there was a loaded gun in every store you went to? I would feel less safe, especially considering the people that own and work at these stores/bodegas.
How about we stop releasing perpetrators with multiple violent offenses under their belt? Sounds reasonable to me.
