What are you talking about? I had a great apartment for $1,950 per month in Gramercy Park with a doorman. On a salary of $85k per year, the OP can certainly have a doorman if he wants one.
Having said that, I currently live in a third floor walk-up building with no doorman, and am none the worse for wear. In fact, I quite enjoy not having a doorman to watch my comings or goings and like the freedom of just being able to buzz my visitors in, as opposed to waiting for the doorman to have them sign in, etc. The only downside is not having anyone to accept packages, but unless you receive a lot of packages, that's not even a huge deal.
