I am hoping to live in New York for a year on university exchange. My first preference is CUNY Hunter but my school has very limited places to go there, so my 2nd preference SUNY Stony Brook is the most likely scenario for me.

I have done a bit of research via good old Google Maps and it seems like the average commute to Manhattan will be a little over 2 hours on the train. Whilst this is more than I would like, I am certainly okay with just sitting on the train and reading a book etc so I think I will be able to handle the long commute. The internship will only be part-time (most likely 9-5 or 10-6) so I'd only have to do it like 2 days a week anyway.

What I want to know is whether this seems too much in other people's opinions? Am I being too optimistic? Will it be safe to come back on the train at night? Hardly anybody lives on campus for uni in Australia so I have no idea about how safe/unsafe it is returning to campus after dark.
Any opinion/advice is much appreciated.

Haha sorry I just realised my first post is a bit confusing! It was late at night when I wrote it :P
I'll be commuting from the SUNY Stony Brook campus to an internship in Manhattan.

The Port Jefferson line is right next to the Campus and you take that into the city. Probably takes an hour and a half. You should have posted this in the Long Island forums hehe , thats why you didn't get a response.
