My husband and I want to celebrate our anniversary in New Orleans. We have never been and are looking forward to the trip. Does anyone know anything about the Hotel Monteleone on Rue Royal? Is this a safe, fun, touristy area for us to base? Any suggestions on things we must see while there?

It's supposed to be a really nice hotel.

Check out the jazz clubs on Frenchman St. in the Marigny.
View some of the homes of the Garden District
Ride the streetcar up St. Charles Ave. to Tulane Univ.
Shop Royal St. in the Quarter and Magazine St. Uptown

to name a few...

Thanks for the info. I checked over on tripadvisor.com after I posted here and most of the comments were favorable as to Hotel Monteleone, especially as to location. I will keep a list of your recommendations with me when we go. I've always wanted to see the Garden District. Thanks again.

I hope "shee shee pooh pooh" means elegant, romantic and nice.

Lol, yes it does Just my way of saying fancy A friend of a friend stayed there once when they couldn't leave town for an aniversary; they were very impressed.

Thanks Drouzin, good to know we are speaking the same language. I'm really looking forward to seeing New Orleans. May have to re-read some Anne Rice before I get there.

The Monteleone has the COOLEST revolving bar that looks like a carousel. It's a great spot to start the evening even if you don't stay there at the hotel. The rooms are OK, but the view from the rooms is also very nice. Great, central location, but not overly loud b/c it is off Bourbon.
