Yep they are very sweet and frankly not the best dessert ever. I think its just a novelty thing/tradition.

I love the Manny Randazzo's plain king cakes. I brought three of them with me when I moved away from NOLA and I still have one in the freezer.

It's something about the frosting, for me.

Randazzo's are definitely good, as well as Sucre. For a different take on the king cake, try Meche's in Lafayette. They're fried like a donut. All three places ship.

Randazzo's is so overrated. It depends on what sibling you go with because the family was all full of infighting they broke up the original bakery. Frankly none of them can touch the quality product their father put out. Manny is consistent, but the others, Nona, and Joelle runs Camillia I think, well, I've gotten king cakes that were raw in the middle. I have become a Rouse's fan, but wow I miss McKenzie's just simply covered with sugar.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Wal-Mart should just stop. I refuse to buy a king cake where I have to put the baby in myself. That's just stupid.

I didn't like the Rouses king cakes at all. Have not tried Sucre.

A popular bakery here (in Oregon) inserts chocolate coins instead. But their cakes are so small (about the diameter of a pie) that, though they taste pretty good, are not worth it. Next year I hope to just order a good one from . . . at this point in the thread. . . Rouse's.
