We're trying to make up our minds where to move this year so are checking a few states to at least narrow things down.
As a family we need good day programs for disabled young adults no longer in school. If there were good houses with disabled residents that would be great. Ours will probably live at home but you never know, we could die. Social/rec programs are also a plus. I do know services are being cut so web searches I've done could be outdated.

Public Transit - a decent one for getting around town for jobs.Walkeable area for libraries, food stores? Parks.
Affordable homes in safe area - affordable for us is under $150,000.
Have kind of been looking at smaller cities (under 20,000) but to get the services we need, maybe a neighborhood in a big city would be better.
Weather isn't as important, though would be nice if we didn't go into the single digits in winter or triple digits in summer(the odd week or so wouldn't matter, just not for the whole season)

For developmentally disabled adults, you should probably contact the following to see what programs are offered and if there are any kind of waitlists:

ARCA ARCA - Opening Doors

State of NM Dept of Health's DDSD New Mexico Department of Health - DDSD Home Page

The Arc The Arc of New Mexico - Advocates for Persons with Developmental Disabilities and Their Families

Also see State delays funding for developmentally disabled program: Budget crunch keeps almost 5,000 on waiting list, despite appropriations | Medicine & Health > Diseases & Disorders from AllBusiness.com (http://www.allbusiness.com/government/government-bodies-offices-legislative/12992241-1.html - broken link)

Sorry this is not my area of expertise, my son has very minor special needs.

karmathecat,
Thank you for all the links and information. I know budget crunches are making it tougher for a lot of programs. I'm fortunate my dd enjoys working and is able to do simple jobs - we'd like her to keep doing it but she does need help. Thanks again.
