Hi folks. Just signed on and hoped for a discussion about where to live in your State. The impossible question to answer outright, I realize - but would love to get some feedback. All opinions are GOOD opinions to the ears of the uniformed.

Here in Southern Indiana, we enjoy lots of trees, critters, and hills. We love all that stuff. However, we also are beginning to enjoy an excess of neighbors, an excess of RE taxes, and an excess of cold weather. The median home price in our locale is approx $200K and our annual RE taxes are approx $3K. We're a retired couple who enjoys the outdoors and would like to find a relatively quiet place to live, but not completely removed from society and/or medical facilities. Year round warmer climate is a must.

Albuquerque looks to be about half the size of Indianapolis and anything near that large is out of the question for us. We hope to make a motorcycle exploratory trip when the weather permits, but could use any/all direction from NM residents. Thanks.

You might try the areas around Las Cruces, warmer and recommended for retirees. I live in the North--it is much colder than I expected and probably too cold for what you describe.

Sounds like Alamogordo would fit your needs.

Wow! Thanks for your prompt replies. It looks like you both have the same general area in mind. No doubt Las Cruces would be large enough to have access to emergency services and shopping and Alamogordo would be far enough away to escape urban problems. Now we have a NM target.

Prowler...there are lots of beautiful places in New Mexico for you to choose...That being said you mentioned you like trees but do not like cold weather so you might want to give Alamogordo a try. It very mild in the winters (75 mile from mexico) but only 10 minutes up U.S.82 thru the Tunnel and your in the ''Lincoln National forest'' in which there are 100's of squares miles of Pine Trees. There are a number of retirees and services for them there do to the mild winters and from the Air Force base there (Holloman AFB). Good Luck !!

Default Harry

Thanks for the info. I've been doing a little web surfing and notice real estate values don't change much regardless of where someone wants to buy in the U.S. The majority of the real estate listings in the $200K price range and around Alamogordo seem to be homes in subdivisions with little or no acreage. Maybe an up front and personal visit would produce other options.

Yes, the Lincoln National Forest really looks good.

Oh, and I'm really surprised at the temps today in Alamogordo. It's warmer here today in Solsberry, Indiana than it is down there. Go figure.

Try to search for real estate around Tularosa or La Luz. You may be able to find some acreage in those areas.
It was snowing on the pass to cruces this am.

Alamagordo has acerage mostly on the so side of town. Prices with improvements are higher than homes in town. As far as the weather goes, they were just having a clod shot. Look at the temps coming up. We are also moving to Alamogordo when our home sells. How knows maybe we can meet up. Do you play golf? Look at the old theads as there are many..
