I find New Mexico the most interesting state in the nation, not only because of the natural beauty but also because of its character. I thought I would ask some questions, whats with those vintage Chevy trucks and New Mexico? So many people seem to own those really old Chevy trucks in New Mexico, especially in Northern New Mexico.Iis it because of the relative poverty of the state or is it also a cultural thing?, I just find it so interesting. Secondly, anybody who has driven on New Mexico highways, will have to agree that there is so much debris left along the highways of this state, why is that? I have never seen so many rusty trucks, buses, cars, ovens, washer machines just rotting by the highways for 10, 15 years and nobody seems to care. I personally do not have any problems with school buses rotting by the side of the highway, but it is just so odd..and interesting at the same time. Another thing, when I was up in Cuba and not only there, but in other parts of NM, you see so many odd looking houses, i.e mud houses, or houses made out of wood mixed with debris and bricks, that gives the state such an interesting character. Is there a reason for it? or is it just because of poverty? Thanks!
i think one of the reasons there are old vehicles in NM is the low humidity. they tend to rust out less in the dry climate and folks just keep their vehicles running.
as for houses....mud houses....or uh...adobe are traditional around here. its the local materials and the houses bake in the sun and also last forever like the trucks.
the sun is also used to heat homes and you can build awesome earthships out of old tires and packed earth and other recycled building materials. up in taos there are fairly low price earth ships next to million dollar ones and its a pretty exclusive community. no poverty about it. just eco-conscious folks.
passive solar homes are common as well as practical.
