I'll be teaching at an elementary school, probably on/near a reservation this coming fall. Im moving from a very suburban area in upstate NY and I am an active member at our local ymca. In preparing to move, I was poking around on google for some help locating ymcas...and there doesnt seem to be any around that area at all.
Im visiting in April, but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of local gyms or something like that around the area? Im looking forward to rural living for sure, but I am also very active and am not sure that I'd be able to cope (especially with my new job with the kiddies ) without some "me" time at the gym. Any suggestions??
Danielle

Hi Danielle- I googled farmington n.m. gyms and a handful of them popped up. It is sad there is not a YMCA there. I live near Grand Junction, Colo. where the area is three times the population and there isn't one there either. BTW thumbs up on your new job. I'm going to celebrate it by listening to Coltrane's Live At the Village Vanguard!

thanks Double H Glad to hear you like John! Whenever I give out my email address...people assume "cold train" or "coltrain". It's like kids my age just dont listen to good music anymore!

Local gyms seem like a good alternative--if anyone knows of any that I should look into because they're awesome/stay away from because they're horrible...I'd love to find out before I buy myself a membership in april to the gym from you-know-where

Default gyms in farmington

There are a few to choose from in Farmington. Personally, I'm a member of the Perfomance Center at San Juan College. It's a really good deal, I think. 4 months for 70 bucks for the general public (cheaper if you are a student at SJC). They have an indoor track, three basketball courts, aerobics rooms, a climbing wall, a really large weight room with treadmills, weights, bikes, etc. And it's really not busy.

Also, there's a few local places. Defined Fitness is also building a gym here (convert our old large FURR'S grocery store into Defined Fitness and a lazer tag center.)

Those are just a few of your options. Good luck.

Wow.....looks like there are even more options than when I was looking there. There was a fitness center on the Bloomfield Highway that I looked at, too....weights, aerobic machines, a 25-meter pool, et al......

All I cared about was the indoor pool, since I train at home! For a town of its size, Farmington (as well as Alamo) has a lot to offer. The Lions' pool and the new Aquatics Center were also great!

Royal Spa and Fitness Center on the Bloomfield and the fitness center at the college that loboABQ mentioned are really the only current options as far as gyms. The Aquatic Center is an excellent 50-meter indoor facility with a leisure pool and a slide pool also under the roof. Lions is a nice little 25-yard indoor pool.

Keep in mind that you'll be living in one of the largest outdoor gyms in the world.

True....lots of opportunities both there and in Alamo....

Now if only Ski Apache would get some decent snow...

Haha very, very true. However....contrary to popular belief about NM over here on the east coast....there IS a winter season and Gallup/the surrounding area DOES get snow days, so I have to have a back up plan in case Im forced indoors

Possibly-I am still unsure of my placement for teaching this fall--it could be on the navajo or zuni reservations, or on the outskirts, or even in gallup....I dont think I find out until May (then I move in June!).
