Sounds like you'd like Rio Rancho. It's a nice place and has what you are looking for. I'm not sure about the hiking in that area as I live in the southern part of NM where hiking is everywhere.

Rio Rancho has some hiking, ABQ has a lot more but it is pretty much flat until you get to Sandia Mountain which will then depend on where you live and what type of hiking you do. Being close to the River (Rio Grande, Boscue, Spanish for river area, front)
Rio Grande, Bosque, Rio Rancho:
Same Rio Grande, Bosque, Rio Rancho, other area:
Same general area, earlier time, Photo dated Sep 2006, not sure if that is correct, snow on Sandia...

Rio Rancho seems to be pretty much just what we're looking for. Can't wait to head southwest and check it out!

It definitely seems like this is exactly what I'm looking for. As long as there is hiking "nearby" (half hour or so), we'll be perfectly content in Rio Rancho.
Rich,
Thanks again for all the great info. From what I gather from some reading is it seems northern ABQ. is generally a safer area, would that be somewhat true? Maybe you can suggest some of the safer areas in your opinion of course. I'm sure everyone will feel somewhat different as to what constitutes a great neighborhood.
The Rio Rancho area seems to be what we are leaning towards at this point, but we of course will have to visit first. I'm certainly intrigued by Las Cruces as well.
Northeast and Northwest parts of ABQ tend to be overall safe and tend to be the newest areas, and the reference to "West Side" means, west of the river, the Rio Grande, a major commuting obstacle, so look at a map and notice how the area is split by the river. West side tends to be less expensive than the east side. All of Rio Rancho is on the west side of the river. The Rio Grande is the east border of Rio Rancho.
You might want to read through these threads which I listed in no particular order to get an opinion of neighborhoods in the ABQ area:

Poncho, that picture can't be September. The bosque would be green in September and snow in the Sandias usually doesn't start to fall until October. But it's a nice shot.

I know, but it was labeled "Photo dated Sep 2006, not sure if that is correct, snow on Sandia..." but that was film and the development was screwed up, poor colors, plus who knows when the picture was really taken, but I usually have film processed within a few weeks of taking it....

Sounds like you will live near where she goes to school, and then move to wherever she gets the best job. Have you looked into schools yet? Seems like that would be a high priority.
BTW... Las Cruses qualifies for "scorching hot" IMO.
It's a dry heat - unlike the 100 plus degrees they have in NY and New Jersey now. The heat is much more comfortable here.
