I am looking to move to New Mexico from Northern Wisconsin. My daughter is going to be attending college in New Mexico and I have been looking to relocate somewhere warmer, so I thought this the perfect opportunity. However, I have two large dogs and will be looking to rent. I know in Wisconsin there are some town/cities that are more dog friendly than others. Does anyone know which would be the more dog friendly towns in New Mexico? I would prefer to stay in the central or northern parts of New Mexico, but am open to anywhere.

New Mexico is generally a dog friendly state. You might have a problem with some landlords with pets, dogs and "large dogs" It is also a large state, so you really need to give us an idea of what city your daughter is going to go to school in. I assume you and her will be in the same residence?

Judging by the fact that I have not been able to get 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep in over a year due to my neighbor's barking dogs despite several complaints to the city, I would say that dogs have more rights than humans in New Mexico.

Convict, maybe you should try barking back. I bet you'll discover that dogs and humans have exactly the same rights.

I will "second" that. I've come to the conclusion that I'm in the distinct minority in this city in that I expect neighbors to be respectful of other neighbors. I'll be putting my house on the market this year...and if I can sell it I'll be building on acreage to put a lot more space between me and any neighbor's incessantly-barking dogs.

But, since the poster said she is renting, I think Poncho is giving good advice. You may find a lot more limitations with what property owners renting their properties will allow.

Thanks to all of you. You're comments actually give me hope. I hate barking as well, and make sure that my dogs are quite and on leash. I even take my plastic bag with me on their walks so I can pick up their mess. My daughter is going to University in Albequerque and we will be living separate. My main priority is a place that will take dogs. It can be run down, not in the best neighborhood in a small or big town, not really picky about that. Not pciky about the place either if I can afford the rent and be in the same state as my daughter.

I found a pretty clean rental in Rio Rancho although it's pretty far west of town. $1K per month. 3/2 house with an open floor plan.

I don't know about utilities yet as I've only been here a week or so. I came from Lubbock, TX and some of the folks say utilities are more here. We'll see.

Do your research--lots of it! Check out temperature records. We settled in Cibola county (northwest quadrant) at 7,000 feet. Had no idea the winter temps would drop well below zero at night and there'd be a foot or more of snow on the ground--not what we expected! Also, do NOT expect the same work ethic down here as in Wisconsin!
PS: Have lived here 3 years and hate it!!!! What about southern CO or eastern AZ?

Southern CO?

Well, try -13 (7,500 ft).......I forgot about the 2-gallon water jugs in my car, along with a case of soft drinks.

The water jugs froze solid, and a couple of the drink cans froze and broke.

There is snow everywhere out here right now, though it is warming up a little.

I'm not looking forward to going back down to southern NM this week, but I have to go home. It is going to be close to 70 degrees. I hate winter temperatures that warm.

Even my hometown in West Texas is colder than Alamogordo right now. I sure can pick 'em.........and I hope I am NOT there next summer. If I am, I am sure I'll spend most of it up here!

Great little town, sweet people, beautiful country......but the wrong place weatherwise for me.

Southern CO would be too cold for me most of the year. I found that out the year I rode a motorcycle across southern CO on September 26 and froze my tail! Alamo might get a mite hot, but at least it's a dry heat compared to DFW. It's usually either too hot or too cold, isn't it?
