These are some snaps from a day visit up to White Oaks. About 9 miles north of Carrizozo and the intersection of Route 380 on Route 54, you will find the turn-off to the old Gold Town now sparsely populated by artists and other wicked friendly folks. They have houses, a museum or two, the stately old mansions from the gold days, a Volunteer FD, and the cemetery, which is a no-miss. The first governor of NM is buried there, as is Susan McSween, and Deputy Bell (KIA by The Kid) among other notables. It's civilized by the presence of a saloon... which I highly recommend to cut the dust... Should you be enamored of spending more time in the area, ZoZo is also a good take, has food and lodging, and there is always the ZoZo Express...

A nice place, nice folks, and steeped in Lincoln County history..Pat Garrett and The Kid passed through on occassion. It is said Pat was there buying lumber the day the kid escaped. The scenery is awe inspiring...just don't trip over the nuggets...

I recommend one reconnaisance pass.... Then formulate a plan for an in depth return visit. It's off the beaten path, having been bypassed by the railroad, and the gold having run out in the mines, it all but died in the 40's. There's a Dude Ranch there, and a placer claim where the owner splits 50/50 with you too. Something for everyone, and just 9 miles away there is Carrizozo to explore. Ranching territory all around the area too. There are two ghost towns nearby, Ancho and Jicarilla, nice takes. I sort of wish I'd paid more attention to the camera, but the Boss has the good one, and she wasn't with me that day...

I liked these as thumbnails, and LOVED them when enlarged. That John Deere trike is really something!

It seems like each photo should have a nice long story behind it... But that's just me. Why say anything in 25 words when you can string it out to 25 paragraphs, lol.

Smile Pictures speak

There is a story and a half to every point about the places around here. It's a real chore to keep it short. Both the town of White Oaks and the saloon pictured itself have websites that, though edited for brevity, speak volumes to history in pages. It's a good thing I don't write books....it'd be War and Peace all over again...

Talking More pics

Another batch from Alamo,Three Rivers, and Carrizozo...

1. The Andreas are what I look for to judge the air clarity when I get the morning paper out front.
2. The Historic marker is on the side of 54 coming into Zozo from the south.
3. The mountains are the Sacramentos from my front courtyard.
4. The sunset was taken looking west down the street and over Alamogordo, which is about 500 to 600 feet lower than the house in November 2009.
5. The Sleeping Lady of Alamo is what I see every morning over coffee in the front courtyard with the papaer and all the hummingbirds coming and going from the feedera and flowers.
6. The White Sands shot was taken in the Park at random from west to east along a fence line from the perimeter road.
7. Why this one petroglyph caught my eye I do not know. There are a bazillion more in there at 3 Rivers Petroglyph site.

There are so many fossils, tiny little flowering plants, vast vistas, geologic layers to the mountains, etc. here. Exposed fossils can be picked out of the gravel covering our front yard. As a transplant I can tell you that this state is exquisitely beautiful in so many ways and so rampant with colors. Distances are so deceiving. What looks like 15 miles is over 60 miles, and the stars at night down here...just awesome.

Well, when we got there it was snowing. In the middle of March, of course

They said you needed proper caving equipment to explore safely. So of course, this is as far as we went in. I swear, I'm telling the truth

And of course, perfectly sunny when we got back out.
Awesome. I hope to get back up to Fort Stanton and see theirs. I guess proper caving gear is needed there too.

He's beautiful!
They always amaze me when they get spooked off the road and can lope straight up a steep hill with those big ol' racks.
