Despite my screen name, I know very little about the Old West.
I am planning an historical research road trip to southwestern New Mexico (from California) and am hoping to dig a bit deeper into the history of the area than the overview I'm finding in my Google searches.
I'm particularly interested in the Silver City and Hillsboro areas up to the Arizona border towards Reserve during the 1870's to the turn of the 20th century. Information regarding long-distance transportation (such as trains or commercial/military trails), daily living amongst townsfolks, encounters with the Apache, as well as any stories about local figures of the period.
Feel free to discuss any information or direction to informational areas in this forum or DM me if you have specific questions or thoughts.
excellent! thank you both! i will make my way through those readings.
i am planning on contacting the chambers of commerce for the cities i mentioned. might anyone have any other suggestions for folks to contact? experts on the areas, if you will?
I have found interesting New Mexican History through books published by the University of New Mexico Press. UNM Press UNDER CONSTRUCTION Happy hunting!
These folks might have some info. of interest and may be able to hook you up with someone with knowledge of the area. However, be aware that a lot of folks, includng bad guys, got around in the Southwest so you may find quite a few characters who traveled through your area of interest.
@cava1990 - the bad guys are actually a major part of my research. they're also the most fun to read about!
You're right about that and there were plenty of them wandering around the area. This is from Northern New Mexico (around Farmington) but take a look at the pic in the link and see if you recognize any of the names in the caption. Bonus points to anyone who posts the alias of the most famous member of the "gang" supposedly in the picture.
Google up 'High Lonesome Press", many books on the history of the area.
