Areas near Rutgers New Brunswick (East Brunswick, Princeton: condo, townhomes, high schools)

I am looking for areas to live within 20-30 miles of Rutgers NB Campus. We are a bit familiar with areas in Monmouth County, Freehold, etc. I guess I am wondering what nice areas might be West or Southwest of NB.
Need to have affordable housing option (250-300k)
good schools are a must as we plan on having a family soon.
Schools are good. Test scores are above state averages. NJ Monthly ranks the high school 33 out of 316 public high schools in the state.
The southwest part of Highland Park is located within walking distance of downtown New Brunswick and College Avenue where the heart of Rutgers is concentrated. The Rutgers New Brunswick campus actually spreads across several Middlesex County municipalities, and the Rutgers bus system connects the west side of Highland Park to all parts of the campus. All of Highland Park is located within 5 miles of all parts of the Rutgers New Brunswick campus.
Modest single family homes are available in your price range. Highland Park also features a useful, walkable main street with shops including supermarkets and restaurants.
Take a look at East Windsor or Plainsboro. They are about 15 miles south of NB and nestled between Freehold and Princeton, excellent for any kind of shopping you could need. Townhomes have dropped significantly in the last year or so - not sure about the homes. Schools in East Windsor are good, although the high school is shared with Hightstown. Don't know much about the schools in Plainsboro.
From everything you have stated it seems that East Brunswick would be your best bet. One of the greatest school systems in Middlesex County and have properties in your price range. If you could give me some more info I can be certain (ie Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Type of Property, etc.). Just at face value, you can easily get into a 2 Bedroom condo, and even a townhome in certain complexes. Best of luck!
taxes are crazy in highland park and east brunswick, why not spend the first few years in new brunswick, it has abbot school system which means your kids go to school for free when they are 3 & 4. And right now the condo prices are really attractive.
Thanks we are also starting to get more familiar with some of these areas as we dont know anything about Middlesex or Mercer County.
