Hi,
I'm currently working in NY and living in central nj, it's a long commute and we're thinking about moving closer. Considering the expense of living in NY city, I'm trying to find a place close, prefer walking distance, to a PATH station, this way I can take that into the city, i worked near wtc. but i'm not too familiar with the areas where the PATH stops in NJ:
Newark
Harrison
Journal Square
Grove Street
Exchange Place
Pavonia/Newport
Hoboken

Can anyone recommend a place or area to stay, preferably 2 bd, rent or buy, as we're trying to figure out where to look and start looking. payment wise, anything up to 2k/month would be ok.

if nothing is walking distance we can drive as well, just wasn't sure if there is parking near those path stations.

Thanks.

I saw online there where some new places being built in Harrison, also in Union where the train station is on Mo Ave, that's one stop out from Newark Penn on the RV Line.

Would recommend somewhere around Grove street (you can't buy for that, might be able to rent something a walk from the PATH). You may find something in Hoboken, but the places closer to the PATH will generally cost more.

If you're priced out of Grove Street, try Journal Square, Harrison or the Ironbound in Newark in approximately that order.

Harrison is not bad, but the Path station there is not in a residential area, so you would probably be looking at something like a 10-15 minute walk.

The Harrison Station is about to get a major overhaul & the surrounding area. Slowly but steadily Harrison is getting better , but i would stay there now. Its a big mess of Construction & Industrial wasteland. Try the Newark Penn area , they have tons of Hotels & things to do there. Also try the Exchange Place
Pavonia/Newport areas of Jersey City , theres alot of Shopping aswell as a variety of Hotels to choice form. And if you want a Pricey Hotel , try the "W" Hotel in Hoboken , its a few blocks North along the waterfront form Hoboken Terminal : NJT / PATH.

If I had to live in JC...best stops are: Pavonia (near mall) or Exchange place. Journal square is really in a dump area.

My friend lives near Grove street (not far from Pavonia Newport either). I've walked around that area by myself with his dog at like 1am and I'm a 20something woman...I didn't feel too threatened. I'm sure you could find something in your price range there. It's one of the better areas of JC.

Also, look at Kearny. It's close to several PATH stations (I usually use the Harrison station), though you will have to drive. There is a TON of parking at the Harrison station and it isn't too expensive. As others have said, they are working on building up Harrison, but I sort of feel the soccer stadium they are putting by the PATH could actually increase the crime in the area. Just something to think about.
