They'll only make you subscribe if there's a market for subscriptions. Otherwise, they will have to find some other revenue source or go out of business.
WSJ and FT already charge for full access to their website, because they offer a product that is worth paying for.
W*nky NY times by contrast had some failed experiments trying to charge for content.
