Where I used to live there were two garbage companies; one was horrid and would forget to pick up half the neighborhood's recycling. I would call the company directly and ask them for a special pick-up.
Some towns don't give two $hi%s about recycling! Mine is one of them! You basically throw everything that formerly contained liquid into the trash can. Then the garbage truck comes, and takes the cans away.
I'll do you one better. When I lived in Las Vegas, they gave us a trash bin, and three milkcrates on a cart- one for paper, one for glass, and one for metal. We'd dutifully put everything in the nice, orderly bins, and the truck would come along, grab all three bins, and pitch the contents into the back of the truck. So, why was I sorting this stuff into different containers if they were just going to throw it all in the same place???

It's the same way where I work. They have blue bins for paper (that say "recycle" on the side) and regular trash cans for everything else. Then the cleaning staff comes through and empties everything into one big trash can.
Same here at work in NYC. We have a BUNCH of recycle bins (diong plans and drawings use a LOT of paper) and they just chuck them all in the same garbage bins at the end of the day.
No point, really.
Hoboken is MUCH better, with pickup once a week. Places near bars have pickups every night (when I was in downtown on Washington street, I could put out glass and plastic any night and it would be gone in the AM... Not so further uptown unless you leave it outside a bar or near a muunicipal trashcan!!
But follow the advice given, check with your town and see if they pick it up and when, or if you have to make a contract with the garbage company to pay for a recycling pickup....
Check your town or township website. It should have all of the information that you need.
