I am relocating from CT to the closest city that I can commute by PATH or Train to Manhattan.

My dilemna: I have to live close enough so that I can leave work by 5pm, and get back home to pick up the kids from the afterschool program by 6pm.

Which cities are the best/most affordable? (I will be renting).

Also which has the best school system? I have gifted children who currently have the advantage of a good school system, and an array of extra curricular activites.

Any suggestions are welcome

There are not many towns that offer a door-to-door commute of one hour. If you look at the NJ Transit website, you can plug in starting point & ending point to get the transit time on the train, then add time to get to the train station from your home & to your office once in the city. It also depends where in Manhattan you will be working - whether you will have to transfer at Newark or Hoboken to catch the PATH (good if you work downtown near the financial district) or if you should go into Penn Station.

Your best bets time wise would be Hoboken or Jersey City. BUT they are expensive (for the better areas of JC) and the schools are not desirable. There are private options if you would like info on that.

I would reccommend checking some towns websites, some aftercare programs are going as late as 6:30 PM

What grades are your children in?

yes, from newport/pavonia or exchange place one can be in downtown/uptown in less than 20 mins. but not sure of the quality of schools there; would guess they are nice since million dollar condos are popping up in every piece of empty land there.

No, that's not the case, the schools are still JC schools and that's not good.
If you choose that option, I'd go w/ private schools, which is what most of the Yuppie population in the area do w/ their kids.

Two boys; one going to 9th grade, and the other to first grade. Schooling is very important. I am trying to get the oldest into one of the best magnet/charter school in JC (mcnair), but they won't even consider him because we are not JC residents already.

Mc Nair is the ONE good thing that is in the JC School System.
Bergen Academies in Hackensack is EXCELLENT as well, if you consider Bergen County (Rutherford would be a good commute to Manhattan). Also hard to get into, but they may talk to you if you are not here...can't guarantee it but you can try.... www.bergen.org

Can you do private? Maybe even look into scholarships? St. Peter's Prep in downtown Jersey City is an excellent school, all boys... excellent though.

You may want to consider Rutherford... the schools are not as good as upper Bergen, but they are good (elementary more than HS) and you are eligible for Bergen Academies... just a thought.
