I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON THE VERPLEX CO. I HAVE A PAINTING OF THE UNFINISHED PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. THE ONLY THING IS SAYS ON THE BACK IS A OVAL LABEL THAT SAYS THE VERPLEX CO. BOUND BROOK N.J. MY GRANDFATHER BOUGHT IT FROM SOMEONE IN GEORGIA AND GAVE IT TO MY MOM AND DAD AS A WEDDIING PRESENTIN THE 1950'S. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING ABOUT ON THE NET. THERE IS NO SIGNATURE ON THE PAINTING. IT IS VERY OLD BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN PUT TOGETHER WITH WOOD WEDGES IN THE BACK OF THE FRAME. IF ANYONE HAS HEARD OF THIS CO. I WOULD LIKE ANY INFO . THANKS,GEPEACH
Gepeach,
I'm from Bound Brook originally and never heard of the Verplex Co. Bound Brook has changed a lot over the years and I don't know too many originals living there anymore.
But, first, I'd try the public library in BB. Next, I'd try some of the old businesses that are still there. I know of a couple: Bart's Glass and Chitch's Cafe.
Good luck to you.

.........HI GEPEACH...YOU MAY BE SURPRISED BUT I HAVE ANOTHER COPY OF THIS OLD PAINTING....I WISH WE COULD TALK ABOUT it....HOPE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU....polomotivado
I recently acquired the exact same very old oil painting on linen, same label, unsigned and unfinished portrait of George Washington. In my research, Gilbert supposedly used the original to reproduce approximately 75 copies. Could ours be 3 of those? I plan on taking mine to an art restoration expert, as there is some damage--and hoping to receive an evaluation. Any information you've found would be appreciated!
Verplex Art Company was a fairly reproduction house in the 1920's that churned out hundreds of embossed lithographs. Those are not paintings, you can read all about the patent here: https://patents.google.com/patent/US1376653
You can take it to an art restoration expert but you're not going to get much of an evaluation past "not actually a painting."
