My husband is considering taking a job promotion and transferring to Atlantic City. He asked me to look it up on the web, do a little research, and tell him what I think. Maybe you guys can help me.

We currently live in Las Vegas and if we moved he would be working in Atlantic City. I am assuming he would want to live in a suburb no longer than 45 minutes from work. Any recommendations? We have 3 kids ages 8,4, and 15 months so we are looking for good schools private or public. I am not sure how long we will be there so we are considering to rent and maybe buy a house if we decide to stay. Any recommendations on safe neighborhoods or schools?

I am kinda nervous about the whole idea moving from West Coast to East Coast and I have no idea how life, people, or anything is in New Jersey. Maybe someone can ease my worries and apprehensions just a little.

Thanks for any help

I'm assuming he's in the casino industry based on where you're moving from/to. If so, he really needs to come and check out AC- with the exception of the Borgata, it's an absolute dump compared to Vegas. At best, it compares to downtown or some of the older local places, both in clientele and atmosphere- it can't hold a candle to the Strip casinos.

I grew up in NJ, and lived in Vegas in the mid 90's, and you'll be in for a major shock if you're a family that likes the Vegas weather, culture, and lifestyle.

I agree with Bob. I moved to NJ from Vegas last year. We only moved because we had a baby and wanted to be closer to family and like the better schools NJ offers. If we didn't have the baby we'd still be in Vegas.

The cost of living in NJ is crazy compared to Vegas. That is something you'd have to look into. A 250K house in Vegas would easily cost 500K+ here in NJ. I'm in central NJ and haven't ventured to AC yet, so I don't know anything about that area. From what I've read on this board the area isn't so desirable.

If it wasn't for the schools and the fact that you can get a house with a basement and real sized yard we would have already moved back.

Hi Morgan,

Although housing costs are higher, they are nowhere near double, not in South Jersey. And assuming you are "professional" casino people and don't care about the difference in "glitz" factor, you will find life in South Jersey very nice.

I think life is almost completely about your immediate family, friends, and how you choose to spend your time.

America has become very homogenized. You will check out NJ and find the same Blockbusters, Walmarts, and shopping malls that you find anywhere else. Minus a few mountains, which you forget are there most of the time anyway, you will be able to find a nice home in the suburbs and will be very happy here.

While Atlantic City cannot touch Vegas as a tourist destination, your lifestyle here as a resident will be comparable. Plus you avoid searing heat, incredible traffic jams, and the threat of semi-permanent water shortages. And you pick up beautiful beaches and proximity to New York and Philadelphia. Overall it will be a "wash" I think, so give it a chance!

If you need a "glitz fix", you can always hop a plane and be back on the Strip in a few hours.

-Marc

Could not be said better. Las Vegas and Atlantic City are two totally different atmospheres.

Also Las Vegas has better weather.

Default Casino and schools

Borgata is definitely not a dump. It is one of the newest Casino's in AC and I think it definitely resembles more of a Vegas atmosphere. Which I think is so much better than AC. The only problem with the Borgata in the inconvenience of not being able to hop from casino to casino. I have been to Ac numerous times and have stayed at Borgata (although we didn't do that well at the gambling) but thought it to be a beautiful casino. I have been to Vegas also 3x and luv the Paris. But I have no idea about the schools. But my daughter went to Richard Stockton College and loved it.

Thanks for all the information...the culture shock and weather are the 2 things I am most afraid of....since we are obviously west coasters.... Yes, my husband does work with Casinos but, in the Construction aspect. So I am not sure how long we would even be there that is why we would consider renting until we are more definitive.

Thanks again everyone ;o)
