I'm going to be moving to New Jersey in August. My girlfriend is from Mounmouth County (Fair Haven) and we're looking to live around that area...maybe even in Red Bank...we're a little flexible right now though.

Anyhow, I have a job interview for a firm in Staten Island (New Dorp) and I'm wondering what kind of commute that is. I've done searches and keep coming up empty.

Is it best to make the drive or is there some sort of public transportation service (perhaps taking the train from Red Bank to Perth Amboy and trasferring?) that'll make it easier? How long of adrive would that be in rush hour and/or off-peak hours?

I appreciate any help & advice and look forward to becoming a New Jersey resident this summer!

Thanks.

Garden State Parkway to exit 127
Take route 440 east, go over the Outerbridge (anywhere from 5 min to 45 min depending on traffic)
"Korean War Veterans" Parkway till its end (5 min)
Right on Arthur Kill Rd (5 min)
Right on Richmond Rd (5 min)
...and your there

New Dorp near Hyland Blvd could be at least 20 minutes from the Outerbridge. Depends on SI traffic.

Depends on how far from the Parkway your commute starts, and also on what time you're commuting.

Taking the Red Bank area as the example, you could be anywhere from 5-15 minutes just getting to the Parkway. The commute to 440 from there "should" be 20 minutes or less, but at 7-8 am, it could be closer to 45 minutes. Same goes for the trip across the bridge and across the island- "should" be 15-20 minutes, "could" be closer to an hour- especially when the sun is in everyone's faces driving east across SI.

I'd budget an hour if you're leaving the house by 6am, or 1.5 hours if you're going in later.

Thanks for the feedback. My interview is set up for for May 9th, 1:00 PM.

I'm hoping to land a gig in Monmouth or Ocean County but I pretty much will take the first reasonable offer I get just so I have something.

Which leads me to my next question which I'm sure I can do a search on. But what are the best places to live in Ocean or Monmouth for under $1200 a month for a large 1 BR apt? I'm looking around Red Bank but heard not all of Red Bank is so nice. Is that true? What about Long Branch or Asbury?

Thanks again all.

Not all of Long Branch is nice, either, and Asbury Park even less. Maybe you can find a place near Monmouth U. in West Long Branch. But by looking further south, you're lengthening your commute.
