My husband and I have found a home that we are very interested in in the Lake Mohawk community of Sparta. If anyone knows this area it is on Sagamore Trail. We both work in NYC during the day. Can someone please provide me with information on this area, and how the daily commute is to NYC. Is there a bus in Sparta or would we have to drive to another town? Thank you in advance for any information!
That is a trek!!! I know the area but have never lived there. I would imagine the best commuting option to the city would be to drive to the Dover Station and hop the direct train there. You are still looking at a 10 mile drive to the station(15-20 minutes), 80-90 minutes on the train and then getting from Penn station to your office. I'd say you are in for 2+ hours each way door to desk.
not sure of the bus option but I would imagine a drive to a midtown direct train(Dover) would beat it.
People do commute from there, but it is a real long trip. I would advise against it unless you can telecommute at least part of the time. You are looking at 2 to 2.5 hours each way, that will get old real fast.
I live in Jefferson Twp, about 5-10 miles closer to NYC. There is a Park-and Ride on Blue Heron Drive. I have been commuting to downtown NYC for 3 years now. It's pretty rough and I think the reason I haven't completely lost my mind is because I work from home 2 days a week and other days get to ride my motorcycle to the PATH station.
The only way you can both work in NYC and live in Sparta is if you don't have kids to get home to or have solid nanny/babysitter. There were times I could not get home at all and ended up hanging out in bars in Newark until highways were re-opened.
Why do I do it? Because Northern Morris/Southern Sussex counties are awesome places to live and when I get home, I get that "worth it" feeling.
We both work 5 days a week, and I'm a student so we definitely have some thinking to do. We both feel that even though it is a long commute we will also have that "worth it" feeling. It's just a completely different lifestyle. Thank you for your input!
Lakeland Buses run from Sparta (including Lake Mohawk) to the NY Port Authority bus terminal. Many people make the commute daily, though more often probably only one person in the family as it can be a grind and somewhat unpredictable. Travel time on the bus itself is about 1:20 - 1:30 each way.
There is also a park-and-ride lot at the Rockaway Mall - about a 20 minute drive from Sparta. Several Lakeland routes (including the Sparta route) stop at Rockaway. You can drive to the mall and get the bus there instead. The benefit is more frequent departures in the AM and more options returning from the Port Authority in the evening. It can also shorten the total trip time a bit.
Don't do it. Even if you just drive to Dover or Rockaway, you'll get snarled up in traffic on 15 and 80. A long commute gets old very quickly.
