Hi All

I am relocating to new Jersey from India. I am new to US and doesn’t now much about it. My office is at Kilmer Road, Edison, New Jersey-08817. I would like to know the cost of living here. I am a bachelor. I am also willing to travel in public transport for about 1 hour if any house near the office is expensive. I would be happy to rent in single bedroom and single bathroom house. I would like to know what would be average monthly expense for me. My salary package is 55K. I would like to know what would be my take home salary after deduction of tax.

you should easily be able to find a 1br apartment in edison within your price range. You should be able to easily afford 1000-1500/month for rent.

In Edison you should be able to rent or purchase a condo with a decent down payment. There are plently of rentals available in the area under $1500 a month.

Your salary after taxes is probably going to be around $40,000 which will allow you to rent a place, have a car, and life modestly.

The Apt complex I was living in was right across from Middlesez County College and rent there ranges from $990 month to $1700 depending on 1 bedroom 1 bath to 2 bedroom 2 bath. But you would need a vehicle to get to Kilmer.

If you google edison train station, you may find Edison and Blueberry Village just within a few minutes from your office ... from: Blueberry Ct, Edison NJ to: Kilmer Rd, Edison, NJ, USA - Google Maps The 1br 1ba apt rent there is $1,250 now, but many share with other singles.

You can go to Sulekha.com to find apartment sharing as well.

The living cost, if you walk to work, you can save the car loan for $250 to $300 a month, and some $100 gas, assuming you drive within 500 miles a month. Along the walk from apt to your office, there is a nice Farmers Market that you can get the best price. Bank of American is the bank right at Kilmer Rd, and many new comers open account there. The Kilmer Post Office is the largest in the Eastern cost that you can drop mail to arrive NYC in the same day.

Going further down Kilmer Rd, you got the DMV inspection and driver license test center where you can get a driver license later.

Right next to Edison and Blueberr Village, there is a Edison Hollow South where you can search Yahoo to join the community group that many will help you, especially Ajay Patil, who is the owner of the group.

Nearby condo/townhouses include, Edison Manor townhouse, Victoria Park townhouse, Rivendell Apt, Rivendell Village, Rivendell Heights (right next to Kilmer Rd, brand new townhouse, $1800 a month for 3br, many Rutgers Univ students rent there to walk to school, and you can walk to office).

It would be 45 minutes walk to Kilmer Rd as you can see ... from: College dr, Edison NJ to: Kilmer Rd, Edison, NJ, USA - Google Maps
