Come September, I will be attending college in Ewing. I'm considering commuting to campus from New Providence, which Google puts at an hour 20 min drive through 78W, 202S and Rt.31S. Two other alternatives include: 1) taking 206S/95W instead of 202S/31S, and 2) taking 78E, GSP, Rt. 1 on exit 130, and then 95W.
Which route would minimize my drive? Which routes should I avoid due to traffic in the morning? Will I be stuck in traffic regardless of which route I take? I figured only people heading northbound into the city would encounter traffic. I would have leave a little earlier than 7 to make my 8AM classes. I would only commute if I can get there in under an hour. Is that even feasible?
This only applies to my commute to campus. I don't really care how long it takes to get back home, as I will be leaving at different times every day (usually much earlier than the evening rush hour).
I actually do the reverse every day from Hamilton. In the morning I leave about 6:20 and arrive at exit 43 on 78 and it usually get there at 7:30. I take Princeton Pike or 206 to Great Rd up to Belle Mead and pick up 206. Then I go 287 to 78. I think in the AM around that time going south it can be done in around an hour - some days may be worse with traffic or weather. You will still need to give yourself extra time since you never know and you have to arrive for a class.
i often drive from trenton to whippany using a similiar route. 31-202-287. sometimes use 206. sooo many lights. its slow moving. takes me 1 1/2 usually. it the morning rush it would take alot longer. its the lights and single lane stretches that make it suck.
That's going to be an awful commute, is there anyway you can live down there while you're going to school? If not I'd re think choice of colleges.
Yes, but I would prefer commuting.

I will probably try both 202 and 206 over the summer for a few days and see if I can handle either one of them. Doubt I would take the GSP/Turnpike because I would have to take 78E which I guess is pretty bad.

Are you talking about 31 or 206 that is slow moving? They are both single lane. Is there only traffic heading north (in whichever route you're referring to)?
If you must spend three + hours in the car everyday the only sane way to do that commute is 78 e

Yes some days there will be traffic, but it wond be the daily nightmare of lights, circles, slow downs that the other alternate routes would have.
That commute sounds like twice the distance or at least 50% longer going down to the ThornPick plus tons more traffic and tolls.
Its not that bad of a ride at all, mostly country driving.
There are quite a few shortcuts and backroads that work also such as Bear Tavern Rd, as long as you watch out for deer. Other ways too that are a piece of cake to drive.
