Family is moving to NJ (from way down south), hubs job is in Parsippany (near SW corner of Lake Parsippany area). First priority is school (best rated elem, middle, & high schools), second is commute time (<40min) to hubs job and I will need to pick up hours as a nurse at a nearby hospital. After initially being appalled at the outrageous home prices and property taxes we have raised our housing range to $800,000-$950,000. We will be given a few house hunting trips this spring... Where do we start???

What size/style house do you want?

For near-by great schools, you can't beat Mountain Lakes. But lots of options in the area depending on what you want to get from that budget.

Default reply

3-4 bedrooms, 2.5-3 bath, nicely done. I don't mind an older home, as long as it is updated well.

Mountain Lakes is nice as is Morristown but schools may not be up to par. Montville and he would be going against traffic in AM & PM.
Hospitals close by are Morristwon in Morristown or St Clares in Denville..

Cajunbelle wouldn't happen to be coming from Louisiana would she

If schools are the top priority, I recommend starting at researching schools. The NJ Department of Education offers school report cards, so you can look at standardized test scores, class sizes, etc. The link I provided gets you to the Morris County listing, from there you can choose which school districts you want (Lake Parsippany is in the Parsippany-Troy Hills district,) or go back to look at other counties. From that section of Lake Parsippany, you will be within a reasonable distance to towns in the counties of Union, (Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights,) Essex, (Millburn, Short Hills, Cedar Grove,) and Somerset (Bridgewater, Basking Ridge, Green Brook, Warren, Bernardsville,) all of which will have properties in that price range.

I would recommend Rockaway Township and Denville also as they are just maybe 15 minutes west of your work location and good residential towns which go all the way to rural the further north you go.

so far on the MLS I've found one house in Mountain Lakes, one in Madison, one in Mendham, and one in Chatham. I hope the choices are more abundant this spring when we need to buy!

What MLS are you searching, and using what criteria? I just did a quick search on my MLS. In the towns listed (in the cases of Mendham & Chatham I searched the Township & the Boro) for single family homes with at least three bedrooms, at least 2.1 baths, and ask price no higher than $950k. I find 48 properties.

Try GSMLS.com. In your search area, it will have the vast majority of listings.
