Purely for future plans I was wondering which county and/or city sounds like this or has most aspects.

1. Not exactly a big city, but a city or large town, with some suburbs here and there

2. Population of my hometown is about 60,000, id like to double that, more or less

3. Housing price of 200-400 thousand for a pretty good size home, not a place that'll take a million dollars to get a measly 2 bedroom house

4. An hour at most from NYC

There are places, but once you get to a size of 120,000 those are older urban cities. Not sure you would want to deal with that, and why.

An hour at most from NYC limits your choices, especially in that low of a price range. It's hard to find even a two-bedroom condo for $200K. And "some suburbs here and there" within an hour of NYC is somewhat amusing. There is no "here or there" -- it is endless suburbia radiating out from NYC. Have you ever been to New Jersey before? There is no space between towns here. This is the most densely populated state in the nation.

What is the reason for the 120K+ population criteria within a city for you?

the only ones i can think of are Paterson & Newark
they are the only ones with that high population you are looking for.

Agreed. I'd look in Woodland Park or Elmwood Park ( formerly West and East Paterson). You'll find houses in your budget and commute by train or bus will be about 1 hour. Also you might want to look in Bayonne, it's basically to Jersey City what West Paterson/EP is to Paterson, just ALOT bigger.

You can look in all of the cities mentioned but they are all VERY urban. Paterson, Newark and Jersey City all fit your population criteria.

I don't think the population density thins out until you hit places like Rockaway Township and similar. For instance the southern end of "Rockytown" is normal suburbia while the northern end is miles of wilderness.
