Just wondering if anyone is familiar with NJ 206.

Will be traveling northbound pulling 30' horse trailer, is this road 2 lane?
Is there alot of stop and go and/or traffic lights?

this route seems to save mileage, but is just staying on I-95 (or I-295) a better option.

thanks for your help.

Route 206 is one lane in each direction, and it passes through every town along the way, thus leading to some stop-and-go. While the stop-and-go situation can be very bad on weekdays, it is not unusual to encounter some of it on weekends also.

Traffic lights are not that frequent until you get to Hillsborough, the most congested stretch of the road. In Hillsborough, you will encounter quite a few traffic lights, with some of them only 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile apart. Traffic tends to move slowly through that area.

And then, we have the factor of the Somerville-Raritan traffic circle. This is a high-accident spot, and if cars can have a hard time navigating the circle without incident, I would hate to be pulling a 30' horse trailer around that circle.

If you are interested in the best possible gas mileage, you should stay on I-95.
If you want to make your trip more quickly, you should stay on I-95.
If you want to be safer, overall, you should stay on I-95.

On the other hand, if you want to see some nice scenery along the way, you might take Route 206.

A lot depends in your final destination on I287.

I used to pull a car hauler South from I287 to I295 and once went the 206 route and yes there are many lights and you go right through the center of Princeton.

I found it better to go route 202 south to route 31 and pick up I 95 to I 295.( the reverse could work for you)

Yes, it will be constant stop and start, it's horrible.

Stay on 95 or 295 to 287.

If you mean from DE, (or PA's 95) then I would suggest picking up I 295 to 31 North. Pennington area on 31 has a few circles, but large enough to accommodate the trailer (many trucks go this way - as do a few tractors, which will slow the ride) but unless you are going at night, Princeton on 206 would be a night mere. There is even turns in the city which will be a pain.

I'm not sure how far you are going, but instead of getting off 31 for 202, you might want to stay on 31(which is also 202 up to Flemington) up to 78, then East or West. I wouldn't recommend further on 31 past 78, due to winding hills but you know your trailer's capabilities.

206 north of 80 is the same, single lanes through towns and hills, so if you do go to 31(202) then up to 78 (on 31), head East, picking up 287 north then to 80 or NY wherever. (Note - 202 merges into 287 as does 206 at Bridgewater area; another reason to avoid that area, too much converging traffic, 22, 202, 206, and 28-I think too). As for Route 1, just say no.

By the way I hate traveling on NJ95, which is why I don't recommend it.

Where are coming from and going to.

I use 95 to 31 to 202 to 287 quite frequently, a little longer mileage wise but much faster

THANK YOU ALL! That answered my question perfectly! I guess we will stay on 295 to 287! (Sounds like it might be quicker to take the horse out and ride him up 206! - just kidding..)

Appreciate all the help!

we're heading up 287 then over Tappen Zee. I've always taken the Garden State with no troubles (non-rush hour) but thought I try a little different route. are there tolls on 287?

There are no tolls on 287 except for one in NY state on the Thruway which is for trucks only, but there has never been a direct connection from 295 to 287.

yea I was wondering why they were saying that. Maybe they mean Turnpike (NJ95) The Turnpike/95 in NJ is a toll road also btw.

Now for something NJ style - I295 Northbound turns into "95" near Trenton (er that'll be 95 SOUTHBOUND) which eventually goes into PA as 95. So you get to see a sign that says I295 North/I95 South Anyway that's I295's terminus.

287 is way NorthEast of that, up near Woodbridge (and the Parkway and the turnpike-NJ95), which coincidently, is also a terminus (for I287).

So the turnpike (NJ95) is direct, less travel but costs more, especially pulling a trailer.

Um, you're going to the NY Throughway (Tappen Zee Bridge)? Why are you getting on 287? It goes West at that point, then up and around. Why not get on the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge? It continues straight up to 87/287 near the bridge. OK I just realized you are already traveling...
