Hi everyone,

I will be starting law school in the fall (Rutgers Newark) and I will need to find an apartment close to the school. I am a single female and would prefer somewhere safe and also not too far from the school. Which towns should I be looking into? Also it shouldn't be somewhere too pricey. Thanks!

You should also look into Bayonne. It's still a pretty good town.

What's your budget?
Belleville, Bloomfield and Kearny are decent. Lyndhurst, Rutherford, North Arlington and Nutley are nicer, though a tad bit pricier.

You can get lucky in Montclair, but overall it's pricier than all of the above.

Stay... Away... From.. Irvington, East Orange, and Orange.

I wouldn't want to pay more than $900 to 1k for rent (for a 1 bdr).

-thanks for the warning about those three because I saw some very inexpensive apartment listings in E. Orange that got my attention - now I know better

If anyone knows of any condo like complex 10-20 minutes away from Newark I'd be very interested. Right now I live in a condo in the Princeton Junction area that I love and would be very happy to find something with the same atmosphere.

Great Advice above ... I dont know if your driving or public transportation
but if its public Transportation a plus for bloomfield is the Light rail it takes you about a block way from Rutgers. Good luck!

I went to RU-Nwk and lived in the graduate housing. The law students were around the library til late hours and majority stayed on campus. Hopefully you aren't in many situations where you have to get out of NWK after dark. The campus is safe, but surrounding areas are a bit sketchy. With your budget, is staying on campus out of the question? You can get a single in Talbott with 3 other law school students. Just a thought.

I definitely need to be off campus (I work from home so I cannot dorm - need a nice quiet apartment). Also I will be an evening student - and will be at the library until late hours studying.

I have a car and plan on using the student parking decks so hopefully I won't have to walk around Newark by myself after 10pm.

I would really like somewhere 10-15 minutes driving distance so that I can maximize my time
