Hi everyone. I am going to be doing some minor work to my master bathroom and am not sure if I should even call the town to inquire about permits.

I am replacing my toilet, replacing my vanity, moving a current GFI Electrical Socket over a few inches on a wall, turning a current light fixture into a GFI Socket (for the built in vanity lights) and adding a lighting fixture in my hallway.

I am nervous that if I call the town they are going to want to re-assess..

Replacing fixtures in their current locations is typically considered "maintenance", so a permit shouldn't be required, but some towns have stricter requirements. "Moving" the GFI technically should have a permit, but I'd doubt most building officials would require one for what you're talking about.

Thanks Bob. I am having a licensed and insured electrician complete the work, I just don;t want to wast the money or time on a permit if I don't have to. I am in Union Township and I spoke to the management company for my townhouse and they said they were not sure.

Adding the light fixture in the hall is the part that sounds like it may need a permit. No exisiting fixture there, right?

Half Full, you are correct that there is not a current fixture there. There is a fixture at the end of the hallway and I am hopinh that he will be able to run the lines from there. My electrician is coming Saturday for the estimates and I am hoping he will know if a permit is required.

DFBonnett - I am all for doing things the right way the first time. If a permit is needed then I will gladly pay the money to get it done to avoid the hassle that it causes on the back end.

Since you are obviously a by the book kind of guy, why waste time dicking around on here?...call:

Rich Malanda
Phone Number: 908-851-8509
building@uniontownship.com

http://www.uniontownship.com/Test_Si.../Building.html

He is the manager of your towns building department, he will tell you yes or no and his answer is the only one that counts.

Since you asked...I would NEVER get a permit for doing the work you are doing although I bet it is technically required.

Sorry about that" a by the book kind of gal"... funny I just called your building department(the number above), they picked up on the 2nd ring, I spoke to a very nice woman who informed me that if you are moving an outlet you need an electrical permit. It will be 40 something dollars and will take 7-10 days to get approved.

I have literally been trying for a week as has my neighbor who is going from a single sink to a double. We have both left numerous messages with no response.
