My husband and I parked in South Orange for dinner. When we returned to our car, we had a ticket for obstructing our license plate. Our car has the very standard, plastic, small frame around the plate that the dealer puts on. It has the dealer's name on it, and it seems like 90% of cars have it.
We were so confused, so we went the the South Orange police station. The officer who helped us said that he was livid when the rookie police officer came in with a dozen of the same ticket. Apparently, there is a very hidden NJ law stating that you cant have anything around your license plate. We decided to just pay the fine, as opposed to fight it. Taking a day off of work would be more troublesome!
Don't the police have better things to do in South Orange? Although SO is nice, there are definite crime issue there. Don't get it!
Anyone deserves a ticket if they broke the law. Good for the rookie cop for trying to raise money legally for a bankrupt state! Instead of complaining about cops doing there jobs, complain to the dealership and to your politicians that you voted in who made the law to begin with.

I agree that there are always better things that cops could be doing besides picking on niggling little issues.
But if it was against the law, no sense (or justification) for fighting the ticket.
I think the ticket was 35? Not sure, my husband dealt with it. We called the dealer and told them. They never heard of such a thing. If they are illegal, then they shouldn't be sold anywhere in the state like fireworks. . However, the cop said that the law doesn't outlaw the frames just ones obstructing the plate. Doesn't make sense! I can understand the ones that are decorative or have those crazy chains around them.
It is just sad to think that a cop took at least an hour of his time to write these tickets when s/he could have been patrolling a neighborhood or something. Not to mention that I'm sure many of those people did fight the ticket, further clogging up the Essex county court systems. What a waste if the cop's time, my time, judge's time, etc.

If it obstructs part of your plate, yes you can get a ticket.
Some cops will use this & seatbelt as a break...you were speeding but he called you in and has to write something so instead of speeding ticket he issues a nonsense ticket that won't cost you points...BUT parked in a diner lot...what was this rookie thinking...lmao

Curious ... how was yours obstructing the plate? The ones that come to MY mind simply cover around the border by about 3/8". Is this the type you have/had?
How about a picture of the plate? (you can blank your numbers).
